Ali Baba and Forty Robbers

Once upon a time, there lived two brothers in Bagdad- Ali Baba and Kasim. Ali Baba was an honest and poor woodcutter, while his brother Kasim was a greedy merchant. He treated his brother Ali Baba, his wife and son badly.

One day, Ali Baba saw lots of men on horses while he was cutting logs in the forest.  He instantly climbed up a tree and saw that all the men had saddlebags full of gold. They stood in front of a cave. One of the men cried, ‘Open, Sesame’, and a secret door in the cave opened and the man entered into the cave. The others followed him. After a while they came out and the leader cried, ‘Close, Sesame’. Ali Baba noticed with wonder that the door became closed.

When the thieves left, Ali Baba walked to the entrance of the cave. He said the magic words and entered. He was amazed by huge gold, and jewels piled up there. Feeling it was alright to steal from thieves, Ali Baba decided to take some gold home for himself and his family. When he got home, he showed the gold to his wife and sent her to Kasim’s house to borrow scales so she could weigh the gold.

Kasim’s wife was also cunning like his husband. She could learn about the gold of Ali. Kashim went to Ali’s house at once and asked about the gold. Ali Baba told his brother about the cave, the magic word and the forty thieves. The next morning, Kasim went to the cave with ten donkeys carrying ten huge chests. Unfortunately he got inside by saying the magic word but he forgot that to get back out. The thieves found him inside and killed him.

When Ali Baba went to the cave again and brought his brothers body, the leader of the thieves realized that somebody else must know their secret. They set out to look for him in town and found him at last. The leader of the thieves disguised himself as a merchant and bought forty large clay oil jars with loose lids. He told his thirty-nine men to take their swords and daggers and to hide inside the jars. His plan was to take shelter in Ali Baba’s house and kill him. But Marjinah, a wise servant of Ali Baba discovered the plan and killed all thirty-nine men by pouring boiling oil on them. When the leader came to find why his men were not ready to fight, he saw they were all dead and he ran away.

Later, the leader came up with many plans to kill Ali Baba. However, each time their plans were foiled by the clever servant of Ali- Marjinah.  Ali Baba was so impressed with Morjinah that he offered his son Khaled to her for her husband. Khaled happily married Marjinah and all of them started living happily.
