Dividing the Cake

Once upon a time, there were two rats in a bush. They lived together and used to eat together what they got. Sometimes they quarreled with one another about their shares of meal.

One day they got a piece of cake. Each of them wanted to have the larger share of the cake. So as usual they began quarreling. They continued quarreling for a long time. They exchanged a lot of hot words. But all went in vain. They could not be able to come to a decision about how they would divide the cake among themselves. Even they were about to fight with one another. At last, they decided to go to a monkey who had a scale. Both of them reached the house of the monkey. He came out from his house smilingly. He heard the whole matter and assured the rats, "Don't worry. I have a good solution of your problem. I will try my best to divide the cake among you equally." He told the rats to give the cake to him. The monkey was very cunning. He divided the cake into two pieces in such a way that one piece grew a bit larger than the other. He bit off a portion from the large piece and ate that instantly. As a result, the other piece then became larger. The monkey bit off a portion from that piece and ate instantly. One of the two rats cried out "Why are you eating our cake?" The cunning monkey answered with a serious mood, "oh! Don't you understand that I am trying to make the two pieces equal? Why are you disturbing me?" The two rats were perplexed.

Thus the monkey ate almost the whole cake. There was still a little portion of the cake. Both of the rats shouted, "Stop eating our cake. Give the cake back to us now." In fact they realized that this dividing of monkey was a trick of him, nothing else. But the monkey did not hand the rest of the cake to the rats. He said, "There is only one piece of cake. You are two, fight with one another. He will get the piece of cake who will win the battle." Saying this, the monkey started smiling. Seeing his smile, one of the two rats wanted to teach his a good lesson. The other resisted him and said, "He is not our enemy. Our enemy is quarrel. Let's return our home and promise not to quarrel anymore.

From that time, the two rats never had any dispute over their shares. At this they led a happy life.

Moral: "Quarrel ends with loss."
