Globalization and Modern Technology

Globalization is the 'biggest idea' of the late twentieth century. It refers to a process of diffusion of commodities and ideas around the world by which the experience of modern life is becoming standardized day by day. There is a very close relationship between globalization and technology. In fact, globalization is largely based on a strong technological foundation.

To speak the truth, the process of globalization has become possible by the bounty of technologies. Without the help of technology, the term 'globalization' is motionless. Every single technological device is used as a tool of globalization. In a word, we can say that, modern technology is the driving forces of globalization.

The invention of the script can be considered as the first technology of communication that contributed to globalization. In the past, man could transmit and store information with the script. Transportation and communication in these ages were in parallel to each other. That means both communication and the transportation system were in a very poor condition.

Invention of the print machine by Gutenberg was the most important revolutionary technological development, which had accelerated the motion of globalization. Soon after this event, the emergence of the newspapers also marked an important era of globalization. The commercial and political news of those newspapers was indispensable issues for the decision makers.

Another milestone in the history of globalization is the invention of telegraph by Samuel Morse. Telegraph made it possible to communicate with the places where we don’t have to go and separated the practices of communication from those of transportation. This aspect of telegraph soon drew the attention of military ranks and telegraph became both a civilian and military communication technology.

Telephone of Graham Bell in 1861 contributed a lot to communication networks. It played a vital role in widening trade and commerce across the whole world.

Invention of radio as a wireless communication technology opened a new era of globalization. With radio it became possible to communicate with places where we cannot go and even with places where no one can travel. It soon became a military communication tool especially for the navy. Radio of 1920’s however, turned to be a commercial communication technology; and is used as a mass communication technology.

Transportation technology is an important fact in the globalization process. The invention of railways, airplanes, and jet planes contributed a lot to globalization. First propeller driven passenger plane began service in 1919 between London and Paris.

Later, the invention of television, cellular phone, computer and internet has made the world a global village. Now-a-days, the electronic transfer of information via the internet has created an instantaneous and interconnected world of information resulting in 24 hour trading network. This technology has largely changed banking and financial activities.

Worldwide money transfer and transaction of business have now become a matter of clicking the mouse of a computer. Five out of every six dollars that move in the world economy today travel through the electronic medium. Some products like software and TV programs are now also amenable to digital or electronic transmission. We can now buy and sell goods through the electronic screen. Computer and internet have thus brought about a revolutionary change in today's world. Globalization is now only what technology makes possible.

With technology, the world has changed drastically. The number of such people are increasing in the world who think that, "To improve the world as the greatest planet of the world, we need three things- technology, technology and technology".

Female Education in Bangladesh

The men and the women are the two wheels of the society. If one of the two falls defective, the society cannot make progress. Hence we need education for the females as we need for the males.

Mothers are the first teachers of the children. So the female education is highly necessary for any society. If the mothers be ignorant, they cannot take proper care of the children. They cannot infuse good qualities in them. If the females remain ignorant, the very foundation of a society remains weak. So, female education is quite essential for the women. The women are in no way inferior to men.

In western countries the women are writing books, driving cars and airplanes, running banks and big business firms and doing research in the laboratory. There are women scientists, women officers and women writers. The typewriters, the news agents, the sales agents the commercial solicitors are mostly women. Hence, we cannot deny the women-folk in our country.

In our country, women are about half of our total population. Hence, it is not possible for us to develop the country keeping our women uneducated. The blind faith and age old superstition was a big barrier to the female education in our country. But now-a-days people have felt the virtue of female education. Now they do not hesitate anymore to send their daughters to schools, colleges and universities.

Today our women are working in various sectors and contributing lots to the development of the country. They have come out of the cocoon and working hand in hand with men. They are joining in various professions from train driver to pilot. By receiving higher education, they are serving the country being doctors, engineers, teachers, administrators, traders and even judges. Besides these, women are now working in defense with great bravery and sincerity. As social workers, they are helping the poor and illiterate people by giving them advice about the rules of health, importance of education, family planning and so on our garments sector is leading in earning foreign currency. Nearly 90% of the garments workers are women of our country. The role of women in agricultural society, particularly in harvest time is also notable. A good number of women are working in poultry farms, cattle rearing and hatcheries all over the country.

Day by day the women workforce is becoming wider. The country is going ahead by the bounty of their hard labour. To speak in short, our women are the co-architect of the economic development of our country.

The female education has some disadvantages too. It is seen in Europe and America that the educated women do not want to bear children. They do not like children. They leave them in the nursery, more out of their disgust than for any other reason. But the defect does not lie in education as a principle. The defect lies in the curriculums.

Bangladesh is now optimistic in the field of female education. This is the country where female like Begaum Rokeya, Sufia Kamal, Irin khan, Sultana Kamal have born. So Today or tomorrow, the women of our country will stand upright with honour and dignity.

My First Day at College

In every human life, there are some evocative events which stir our mind. These events sometimes peep through our mind and we entered into our past. First day at college is such an golden event in our life. It is one of the most memorable and sweetest episodes of our life. In fact, past is always golden to us.

I had been earnestly waiting for that day for a long time, because I heard many things about college education from my elder brother and neighbors. Their words made a particular feeling in my mind. I started dreaming at night about my college life. At last, the long-sought day came.

It was the 1st of August, 2010. I was well-dressed and started for the college with the blessing of my parents. It was quite early when I reached the college. As far as I can remember, it was 9am. The name of my college is Viqarunnisa Noon School and College. It is one of the most reputed colleges of the country. I became highly fascinated after seeing the college campus for the first time. I wondered at the splendid beauty of the academic building. The whole campus was crowded with lots of young students. I looked around with a mixed feeling of perplexity and joy.

At first I felt very lonely. Within a short time, I met several mates who also had taken admission with me. We exchanged greeting with one another. I took my class routine from a mate named Jui. The first item on the routine was an introductory class on English. I joined my class in room No.111. A well-dressed middle-aged madam came with the attendance register. We all stood up to honour. First she introduced herself and asked about every student. Then finishing roll-call, he delivered a short lecture on college-life. I realized the difference between the school and the college. What impressed me most was the fluency with which he spoke in English.

One by one, two more classes took place on the next two periods. All the teachers were highly qualified and friendly to us. Consulting my day’s routine I found that the next period was an off-period. This gave me a chance to make a tour round the college premises. I noted with a sense of relief that I would no longer be confined to the same room for hours together as I used to be at school. My mate Jui was familiar with the campus earlier as her elder sisters studied there. She took me to the college canteen. We took some light foods there.

From the canteen, we went to the decorated common room of the college. There I found several daily newspapers and periodicals. There were also good arrangements of indoor games like Caroms, Table tennis, Chess etc.

The interesting matter was; when we returned to our classroom, there was nobody in the class. It made both of us surprised. Later we came to know that the rest classes of the day had been suspended. After that, I bade farewell to my first friend of my college- Jui. Then I came back home with a strange thrill of pride and pleasure.

Jui is still my intimate friend and will be in future. The college campus will also be crowded with young faces. But one day, I will no more be the student of this campus. As the first day at my college is a memorable day for me, the last day of the college will also be a memorable day; but of great sorrow.
