Life of a Day Labourer

A Day Labourer

A day labourer is a person who does heavy manual labour in various fields. He is a familiar figure to all of us. His life is full of sorrows and sufferings. A day labourer leads a very simple life. He lives from hand to mouth. He is entirely dependent on other’s work because he has no land or property of his own. He is illiterate or half-educated but industrious one. A day labourer has to struggle every single day of his life for the survival of his family and himself. Usually he gets up early in the morning, takes his poor meal and goes out in search of work. He has to work eight to ten hours a day. As he has to do only manual labour, his job is very much toilsome. But it is a matter of great regret that he is not paid well. When the works become scarcer, he does not get any work. As a result, he and his family are to go without food. Usually a day labourer lives much below the poverty line. His life standard is very low. He lives in a hut or a shabby house. Often the place is unhealthy and unhygienic. He can not afford to buy good food and clothes let alone education for his children. They suffer from malnutrition. In fact a day labourer is deprived of the basic human rights. His sorrow knows no bounds when he can not earn in case of sudden illness or rough weather. Though unfortunate, but it is true that a day labourer is born in poverty, lives in poverty and dies in poverty.
