The Judgment of a Young Kazi

Long ago a sultan named Giasuddin Azam Shah ruled Bengal. He was very righteous and kind. Very often he used to go hunting. Once when he shot aiming a deer, the arrow missed and hit a son of a widow. The widow went to the local Kazi to present her complaints against the sultan and prayed for justice.  

The Young Kazi Siraj-ud-Doula summoned the Sultan and sent a messenger to the Sultan. The security forces of the Sultan did not permit him to enter the palace. Finding no other alternative, the process server started sounding 'Azan' at untimely hour. Hearing the untimely Azan the Sultan became annoyed and brought the messenger inside the palace to punish him. Getting the opportunity, the messenger summon of the Kazi upon the Sultan.

On the fixed date, the Sultan appeared before the Young Kazi's court. The Kazi did not show any traditional respect to the Sultan. He held the trial upon taking evidence. The verdict went against the Sultan and he was proved guilty. The Kazi sentenced him with fine. The Sultan obeyed the judgment and paid the fine to the complainant and begged apology to her. The trial was accepted by the widow mother and she expressed her satisfaction.

After the trial, the Kazi got down from the judicial seat and bow down before the Sultan. The Sultan told the Kazi that if he would not have held the trial in accordance with law, he would have beheaded him. The young Kazi Siraj-ud-Doula told in the same spirit that if the Sultan would not have obeyed the verdict of the trial, he would not hesitate to use strong measures against him.

Moral: Law is Equal for All.
