Write a Report on the Students Protest against Medical Admission Policy

Students call off Agitation over Medical Admission Policy

Staff Correspondence

The crisis over the medical college admission in Bangladesh ended yesterday as the admission seekers have withdrawn their movement on an assurance from Health Minister AFM Ruhul Haque that the government will hold admission tests to enroll students in medical colleges for the 2012-13 sessions.

The agitating admission seekers under the banner of ‘Medical Bhortichchu Shikkhartibrindo’ announced the withdrawal of the agitation at a press conference.

The lawyer, who had filed a writ petition with the High Court (HC) on August 13, also moved the court with an application seeking withdrawal of the writ immediately after the students informed him about the government's assurance at a meeting at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

Backtracking on his earlier stance to enroll students in medical colleges on the basis of Grade Point Average (GPA), the Health Minister assured the students of holding admission tests.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, he said that, ''The government will take the final decision as per the High Court direction, if the writ petition is not dropped. The admission system for the sessions following the 2012-13 sessions will be decided at a meeting later''.

The representatives of the admission seekers, however, told reporters after the meeting that they differed with the minister in some aspects. They said they conveyed to the minister that GPA-based admissions should not be introduced before 2016.

The crisis over medical college admission began as the students protest across Bangladesh demanding the withdrawal of the GPA-based admissions finalized by the Health Ministry at a meeting on August 12.

Write a Report on the World Bank's cancellation of the Padma Bridge Loan

''We will not Accept any Calumny''

Criticizing the World Bank's cancellation of the Padma bridge loan over corruption allegations, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government would not take any blame for something it had not done.

“I am confident that we did nothing wrong. We will not accept any calumny. Why should we take the blame for an offense we had never committed?” The prime minister was speaking at the national council of Awami Swechhasebak League at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the capital.

"How could corruption take place when the World Bank did not disburse any money? Asked Hasina, president of the ruling party Awami League. She mentioned the government had so far spent Tk 1,500 crore on land acquisition and rehabilitation. And no corruption allegations had been raised said Hasina. She also said “Inshallah, we will be able to start the bridge's construction in time.

"We have to be bold to take the project forward. I know they [the WB] are very powerful but we want to say that Bangladesh won't bow to anyone."

Casting aside doubts that the government would not be able to build the bridge with its own funds, Hasina said she had received overwhelming response from common people and they had proved that the government was on the right path. The prime minister said if donors come up with offers to fund the project, the government would decide on it after scrutiny.

Later, she directed Awami Swechhasebak League leaders and activists to showcase the government's development activities and work to help build Bangabandhu's “Sonar Bangla”.
