The importance of trees in our daily life is beyond description. In fact, nothing can be more useful for us than trees. To speak in short, trees are the part and parcel of human life.
The existence of human life would be impossible if there was no tree around us. Tree leaves oxygen in the air. It is a life-saving gas for all living beings. We need oxygen for our breathing and living. So tree is a mute friend of man. It can not talk to us or move from one place to another. Nevertheless, it goes on helping us silently as a great friend. It contributes a lot to our daily life.
It will not be an exaggeration that our life-cycle largely depends on trees. Since the first day of human life on the earth, man has been using trees for various purposes. It gives us food, shelter, shade, flowers and even medicine.
In a broader sense, bulk of human foods come from trees. Most of the food grains come from the plants which are also one kind of tree. We get favourite various types of delicious fruits from trees, such as mango, jackfruit, banana, palm, guava, lichi, apple, black berry and so on. These fruits keep us healthy and active. Besides, anyone can be economically solvent by cultivating these fruits.
We can not think of our dwelling place without tress. There are some trees which give us timber, such as- shal, segun, sundari, gewa, jarul, gamari etc. The timber we get from these trees, is used to build houses. We need timber not only to build houses but also to make various types of essential furniture like-chair, table, bedstead, almirah, bench and so on. We can earn foreign currency by exporting timber-made furniture.
Tree gives us freezing shade. It keeps our environment cool and fresh. The weary passers-by take shelter at the shade of tree on their way. Birds also build their nests in trees. Their sweet chirping makes our mind cheerful. Besides, in the time of dangers like floods, storms, cyclones; trees can save us.
Trees are used as raw-materials in various industries. It is used as fuel too. Paper is an essential thing in our life. It is made of wood. Rubber, which is used world-wide is got from one kind of tree. Big industries of paper, plywood, matches, railway slippers use trees as their chief raw-materials.
Trees are used to make medicine too. There are some trees and plants which are directly used to prevent diseases. The fruit, seed, bark, leave and root of some trees are used as medicine.
The best contribution of trees towards the world is its power of preserving the environment. It helps us to prevent pollution. It keeps our air clean by absorbing carbon-di-oxide, which is gravely harmful to us. It prevents the erosion of our land and keeps the soil strong. Besides, tree causes rainfall and prevent drought. Only trees can save an area from becoming a desert. Thus it prevents global warming which is the burning question of the world. In maintaining the ecological balance, tree plays the chief role.
There is no alternative to trees for leading a happy and prosperous life. So, we must protect the existing trees and plant new ones. We must not forget that taking care of trees means, taking care of ourselves. Great poet Rabindranath Tagore entreats-
“Give back the forest, take your town”.
