Story of A Lucky Rickshaw Puller

Selim was a poor rickshaw puller in Dhaka. He earned his livelihood by pulling rickshaw. He lived in a slum of Karwanbazar with his little family. Everyday he got up early in the morning and went out with his rickshaw.

One day, Selim was wandering with his rickshaw and searching for his passengers. At that time, he saw some men selling lottery tickets sitting in a micro-bus. They were attracting the passers-by with their subtle speeches. Selim was tempted by their words and bought a ticket. He thought in himself, "If fortune smiles upon me, I might be lucky! He also thought, "If I really win a lottery, I will be able to lead a happy and prosperous life". He was waiting eagerly for the draw-day of the lottery. A few days passed away. Then the much awaited day came. He was very much excited and could not think over anything else except the lottery ticket. He purchased a daily newspaper to know about his lot. However, he saw the number of his ticket on the first page of the newspaper. Luckily, he won the second prize and the prize money was ten lacs taka! Selim could not believe his own eyes! He was too much astonished and checking again and again to be sure that it was the number of his own ticket. He returned home very quickly and told it to his wife and beloved son Ratan. Ratan was a college student. Though he was a bright student his poor father could not bear his educational expenses for want of money. He thanked God and thought that, "From now, I won't have to be worried about my educational expenses. On the next day, Ratan went to submit the ticket with his father. After getting ten lac taka, Selim paid his debt. He planned with his son Ratan to utilize the prize money properly. First they donated one thousand taka for the mosque. After that Selim started a stationary shop giving-up rickshaw pulling.

Thus, Selim’s lot changed radically. Then he became a solvent person. His sorrowful days ended and began his happy days. It was his fortune for which he became able to see the happy days.
