Myth and Literature

The word “Myth” comes from Ancient Greek “Mythos” meaning speech, narrative, fiction or story-telling. A myth refers to a traditional or classic story or collection of stories that is closely tied to a certain geographical location, group of people, or religion involving supernatural events. On the other hand, Literature is art of words that contains lasting artistic merit. Myths and Literature are interlinked with one another. Both Myth and literature are part of cultural heritage of a society or country. Myths have played a significant role in literature throughout history. Myths allow writers to explore profound themes, tap into universal human experiences, and connect stories to cultural traditions. To speak the truth, myths have provided an inspiration to writers, artists, poets and composers. For ages, they have used Myth as powerful tools for literary creation and exploration. Every culture in the world has their own mythology. It deals with the life, culture, customs, and people of a society or a country. Literature describes the same with artistic images. The poets, novelists, writers observe life and dissect them in their writings. Like literature, myths are exciting and epical. Both contains big heroes and gigantic villains. For example, Greek mythology is an enthralling world filled with gods, goddesses, monsters, and, of course, heroes. Some of the well-known mythological heroes of the world are Hercules, Sinbad, Robin Hood, Achilles, Thor, Odysseus etc. Bangladesh has also a long heritage of myths in our literature. The common myths of our literature are Chand Saudagar, Behula, Lakhindar, Gazi Pir,Khona, etc. The bravery of Gazi Pir is still alive in evening story-telling. The mythical story of Khona and her words are still relevant to our pastoral lives. These myths are the integral part of our cultural asset. We must preserve the myths and literature of our country to preserve the age-old culture of our country.
