Visit to a Place of Historical Interest

Man has a natural tendency to see the unseen, to know the unknown and to experience the inexperienced. As a human being, I am not an exception to this. I have keen interest to visit an unknown places. And if the place is historically important, then my pleasure becomes doubled.

Whenever and whenever I get a chance to visit, I never hesitate to grab the chance. Few days ago. I had an opportunity to visit “Khan Jahan Ali’s Mazar” in Bagerhat. Two of my friends accompanied by me. We went there by bus.

The Unique Structural Beauty of the Mazar: The city Bagerhat is mainly famous for the Mazar of Pir Khan Jahan Ali. Khan Jahan Ali was a great Muslim saint. He laid the foundation of the city Bagerhat. His mazar stands on a raised ground. The special tomb is made of cut out stones. None of the locality can accurately say that from where he brought these rare stones. It is said that the Pir Khan Jahan Ali himself brought these stones from Chittagong by floating on water. On the tomb, there is an epitaph in which his death date is inscribed. There is a beautiful mosque near the mazar. Local people informed us that every year, on the night of the full moon of the month of chaitra a big fair is held beside the mazar. People from different parts of the country come to the fair. Fakirs and saintly people gather here and pass the whole night singing mystic songs.

The Incomparable Tank: There is a big lake-like tank in front of the mazar. The tank is famous for some strange crocodiles in it. People believe that, if anybody can satisfy these crocodiles, their desire will be fulfilled. A Khadem who looks after the crocodiles told us about the strange devotion to their master Khan Jahan Ali. He informed us that whenever the Pir called them out saying “Kalapahar, Dhalapahar, come,” they appeared before khan Jahan Ali with the twinkle of an eye, Still now, whenever the present khadem calls the other crocodiles, they come. We offered them three hens. After half an hour, we left for Shatgombuz mosque. It is about two miles away from the mazar.

The Shatgambuz Masque: The Shatmgambuz Mosque is a vast and beautiful mosque. We knew it beforehand that Shatgambuz Mosque has 60 pillars and seventy seven squat domes including seven chauchala or four-sided domes in the middle row. But its beauty was unimaginable to all of us. For its historical importance and praiseworthy structure, it has been declared as one of the world heritage sites by UNESCO. We were marveled at the beauty of the mosque.

Ghoradighi: By the side of the mosque, there is a large tank which is called-Ghoradighi. There is a saying that, before digging it a horse was made to run a race. It ran covering a certain distance and stood still. That distance was accepted as the length of the dighi. That is why, it was named as ghoradighi. We visited the nearby areas and came to learn about the social works of the Pir Khan Jahan Ali.

We spent almost half a day in visiting those places of historical interest. This was a very short span of time. But that very short time gave me so much pleasure that it left everlasting memorial in my mind.
