Impacts of Facebook/Social Media on Young Generation

Studies have shown that the average person now spends more time each day on their phone and computer than they do sleeping. In the contemporary digital age, social media has become an omnipresent force, significantly influencing the lives worldwide, particularly the youth. With the advent of various social media platforms, young people have found themselves immersed in a virtual realm that offers unprecedented opportunities for communication, self-expression, and connectivity. Social media have both positive and negative impacts on the new generation. The positive aspects of social media on youth are evident in the realm of communication and connectivity. Media platforms like Facebook, Tweeter(X) YouTube, Instagram, have become indispensable tools to bridge geographical barriers. These are enabling our young to interact instantly with their peers, friends, educational institutions, teachers and family. Additionally, the abundance of information available on these platforms has transformed the way youth’s access to knowledge, granting them an array of educational resources at their fingertips. Furthermore, social media has become a breeding ground for online activism and social movements. Hashtags and viral campaigns have sparked global conversations and raised awareness about critical social issues such as #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter, and #ClimateAction. By the bounty of social media, they are now more passionate and contributing to meaningful change in society. Social media allows young people to interact with peers from different countries and cultures, promoting cross-cultural understanding and exchange of ideas. Of late, social media platforms are playing a crucial role for the young organizing various social and political movements across the world. Unfortunately, many young people are becoming addicted to these platforms. Often, social media is used for spreading hate, false info, rumors and operating mob justice. A lot of the people in the Facebook roam around with fake ids, which is harmful. Studies find that excessive use of social media causes massive challenges on the socialization process of younger generation and their privacies. To speak the truth, the impact of social media on youth is multifaceted, encompassing both positive and negative outcomes.
