Our National Flag

National flag is the symbol of a nation's independence and sovereignty. Every nation of the world has a national flag of its own. Bangladesh has also a national flag. The national flag of Bangladesh was adopted officially on 17th January, 1972. It is based on a similar flag used during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. Earlier, there was a map of our country on that flag. The map was later deleted from the flag, most probably to simplify the design of the flag. Our national flag is very beautiful to look. It is rectangular in shape with a proportion of 10:6. The flag consists of two colours-red and green. The red disc is on the middle of deep green. The red disc represents the sun rising over Bangladesh and also the blood of those who died for the independence of Bangladesh. On the contrary, green field stands for the greenery of the land of Bangladesh. Our flag resembles the flag of Japan with the background a different colour and an offset/equivalent sun. On 2 March 1971, the initial version of the flag was hoisted in Bangladesh for the first time at Dhaka University, by contemporary student leader A. S. M. Abdur Rob. Our national flag is hoisted everyday on top of our important government buildings and educational institutions. But on our independence day and the victory day, it is hoisted everywhere. The flag is kept half-mast on the occasions of national mourning days. The flag reminds us about the valliant struggle of the heroic sons of this land. Our national flag always inspire up to dedicate our lives for the greater interest of the country. I feel very proud whenever and wherever I see our flag as it reminds me that I am a citizen of an independent country. In fact, our flag is the source of our spirit, hope and inspiration. We will do our best to uphold the dignity of our national flag.
