Social value refers to the acceptable and admirable norms of behavior prevailing in a society. It consists of social custom, practice, religion and social moral standard. Social value shows the moral standard of a nation. Without social values, we cannot grow up as a complete social man. In the past, social values were more conservative, rigid and strong. The young were more respectful to the old and superior. Smoking in front of the superior was forbidden. People used to believe in joint families. It is a matter of regret that we are losing our social values gradually. People are getting more and more liberal. They follow religion in a more relaxed way. Unfortunately, there is a clear western influence on our culture and values. It is thought to be the main culprit behind the degradation of our own social values. As western music, culture, and modes of life are getting more and more familiar with us, our social values are also getting westernized. Many of us are now accepting western values which are harmful to our existence. Like the people of the western countries, people now prefer living in nuclear families. There are frequent exchanges among different communities in our society. Now-a-days, the criminals are honored as heroes of the society. People feel frightened to speak against their evil deeds. The causes of the present social degradation are materialistic attitude of people in general. Without a few exceptions, people now run after only money, fame and fortune without giving any thought to right or wrong, good or evil, moral or immoral. The effects of social values in the present age are very deplorable. The noble qualities are being exiled. We must have to be alarmed regarding this as soon as possible.
