Paragraph on Traffic Police

Traffic Police is a person who is appointed to maintain and guide the traffic and easing the traffic-jams on cities and towns. Traffic police have been functioning independently in our country since the inception of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in 1976. Even before the establishment of DMP, traffic police used to work under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police, Dhaka district. The origin of modern traffic police can be traced to Dhaka city in 1940s. From that time, traffic police used to maintain roads with whistle and by waving arms and hand signals. The advent of the modern cars intensified the need for more traffic police. Gradually technology has improved and automated traffic signals have come into play. The primary duty of a traffic police is to maintain the smooth flow of traffic in the city. The Traffic Control Room functions round the clock to coordinate with the field units. The life of a traffic police is very toilsome. A traffic police has to do eight hours duty every day. His day starts usually at eight o’clock in the morning. He works at some important crossing of the city to control the traffic. Sometimes he stands under the traffic island and sometimes he has to stand under the scorching sun. Morning is the time when he feels a bit comfortable. But as the office-hour and school-time come near, the rush becomes heavier. All sorts of vehicles, buses, trucks, cars, tempos, scooters, cycles, rickshaws, trolleys get stuck on the roads. Often he becomes upset to guide the vehicles. But it is a matter of great regret that traffic police are ill-paid in our country. Sometimes they falls victim to rude behaviour of the car-owners. We all should be more tolerant on the road and helpful to them.
