| Greenhouse Effect |
The
Greenhouse Effect refers to a gradual warming of the atmosphere around the
Earth. It has become a burning question all over the world. The carbon dioxide
is mostly responsible for temperature rise in atmosphere. Greenhouse effect
happens when the increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere trap the heat
radiated by the Sun. The atmosphere acts like the glass of a greenhouse which
prevents the heat to go back. The carbon dioxide is given off to a large extent
when coal and oil are burnt. The emission of CFC, Methane and Nitro oxide
around the world are also responsible for greenhouse effect. The presence of
these gases to a large amount is making the Ozone layer thinner day by day. At
this, the ultra violate ray of the sun easily penetrates the atmosphere of the
earth. This ray is severely harmful to us. Beside this, greenhouse gases are
responsible for the melting of the ice covering the North and South poles of the
earth. This eventually leads to a rise in sea levels which can submerge many
areas of the world. The average temperature of the atmosphere has risen by 1
degree Celsius in the last 200 years. In future, this increase rate of
temperature will be accelerated. It is predicted that midway through the 21st century,
the temperature of the earth may rise as much as 4°c for this greenhouse
effect. The dreadful matter is that, this will reduce our ability to grow food.
It will also damage wild life severely, raise sea- levels and thereby flood the
coastal areas. So, proper steps must be taken to stop greenhouse effect. Tree
plantation program should be made more popular. Personal and institutional
activities on environment should be encouraged. Above all, mass awareness is a
must regarding this.
