The Clever Astrologer

If we look at the pages of history, each and every ancient king possessed some hobbies. It may be hunting, traveling or others. Whatever the hobby is, they used to get pleasure out of their hobbies.

Once there lived a king in a country. He was fond of knowing his future from the astrologers. He often invited the best astrologer of the kingdom. He also used to welcome the famous astrologers of the neighbouring countries. Once, an eminent astrologer happened to stop at his capital. He was on his way to Banaras.

The king heard about the astrologer and called on him. He was very much willing to know his future from him.  The astrologer found something unpleasant in the destiny of the king. But he was suffering in hesitation. He said,

“Your majesty, I am very sorry for you and I do not intend to disappoint you, but it seems to me that you will not live very long.”

At this the king got very furious. He condemned him to death and said, "Men like you should not live to spoil the peace of the people of the world.” He lost his temper and ordered the guards to kill the astrologer. But another thought crossed his mind before the astrologer was removed for execution.

He asked the astrologer, "How long would you live?” This astrologer thought for a while. The astrologer was clever enough to be sure that the king would prove him a liar. With ready wit he said,

"The stars declare that I shall die only a week before your majesty. I shall wait to receive your Majesty where you have been sending me. So, good bye.”

At this, the king's face turned pale as dead. He postponed the execution and he shouted, "Drive this wretch away, let him not come again.” Instead of killing the astrologer, the king he prayed that he would live for a long while. Thus the clever astrologer saved his life by his ready wit.
