Bangladesh has a long tradition of different cultural festivals. These festivals unit different communities of the country into one platform. Among all these festivals, 'Pahela Baishakh' is most remarkable. It is celebrated on the first day of the Bangla New Year. The day is observed with traditional festivities across the country. The day is a public holiday. Different socio-cultural organizations arrange elaborate progrmmes to celebrate the day. The day's first programme begins at dawn at 'Ramna Batamul'. Chayanat, a leading cultural organization of our country organizes different cultural programmes there. The cultured men and women of the metropolitan city gather there wearing the traditional dresses of the nation. Bangladesh Television telecasts their programme from 6 am in the morning. National dailies bring out special supplements. According to our age old tradition, traders and shopkeepers open 'Halkhata' and offer sweets to their customers and clients. People wear traditional dress on the day to welcome the New Year. Girls wear white sarees with red boundaries and boys wear pajama and Punjabi. Some people eat 'Panta Bhat' with onion, green chilly and Hilsha fish. Bangla Academy, Shilpakala Academy, Jatiya press club and other organizations arrange different programmes at their own premises. As I love and respect Bengali culture, I attend the colourful procession of IFA of Dhaka University and the 'Gano sangeeter Asor' programme every year. At the afternoon, people go to Baishakhi Mela with their family members and friends. This day is a pleasurable day not only for Bangladeshis but also for all Bengalese of the world.
