Once upon a time there was an old farmer in a village. He had three sons. All they were grown up and married. But the farmer was not happy. His sons always quarreled with one another. He tried for several times to unite his sons but failed. At last, the old farmer hit upon a plan.
One day, the farmer called his sons. When they all came near to him, he said to them, "I have called you to give my last advice. Probably, I will not live long. But I feel very upset to see you quarreling among yourselves." Then he asked his oldest son to bring some sticks. The son brought some sticks. Then the farmer told him to bind those sticks in a bundle. When the eldest son completed the binding, the farmer told him to break the bundle of sticks. But he failed to break the bundle of sticks. Then the other two also failed one after another. They tried a lot, but none of them was successful. After that, the farmer told his eldest son to untie the bundle. Then he asked them to take a single stick individually and break it. They easily broke their own sticks. The sons of the farmer were not clear-headed and hence they understood nothing from the event. One of them asked his father, "Why have you done these?" What can be the purpose behind this? Another son asked, "What good will come of it?" The old farmer replied.
"Dear sons, I am making it clear to you. You could not break the bundle of sticks, when they were tied together. But you have easily broken a single stick. Like those sticks, if you live united, nobody can harm you. But if you quarrel among yourselves and stay individually, then you will be easily harmed by your enemies."
At last the sons of the farmer understood the fact and promised before their father to stay together. The old farmer became very happy and prayed to Allah for them.
In fact, there is no alternative to unity if we want to form a happy family, strong society and a powerful country even. Hence, it is often called that- "United we stand, divided we fall."
